Urban Hiking in Pisa
Pisa is a synonym for the Leaning Tower, known as the Torre Pendente in Italian. First time visitors always expect to see it but often, having seen the Leaning Tower, they leave again. This is such a shame because Pisa, as a city, offers so much more. It’s a university town where one feels the vibrant and dynamic pulse of this young world set a long way from the Piazza of Miracoli; the city is full of local restaurants, markets and little bars.
Mixing our hike with art and culture, we will get a real feel for the city and its people; we’ll walk along the most important streets full of different shops and small local businesses such as Borgo Stretto and Corso Italia, Piazza Sant’Omobono with its big fruit and vegetable market and Piazza Dante Alighieri full of law students from The Faculty of Law nearby.
We’ll hike alongside the River Arno and enjoy the magnificent views of the river with its many reflections of the bridges, palaces and churches of Pisa. Standing on the bridge we will take in the vast Arno and come to really understand how Pisa was once a great Maritime Republic. Every June Pisa celebrates its most important festival along the banks of the river, ‘The Luminara’ (candlelight festival), along with the ‘Regatta of San Ranieri’ and the famous Gioco del Ponte (Bridge Games).
